Medicare

Health Care coverage for the elderly

For questions please call

1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)
TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048

Medicare covers most, but not all of the costs for approved health care services and supplies. Once you meet your deductible, you pay your share of costs for services and supplies as you get them. There’s no limit on what you’ll pay out-of-pocket in a year unless you have other coverage (like Medigap, Medicaid, or employee or union coverage). Click here to see cost saving options.

Do you qualify?

  • Medicare is for people 65 or older.

You may be able to get Medicare earlier if you have:

  • A disability

  • End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant),

  • ALS (also called Lou Gehrig's disease).

What does Medicare Cover?

  • Medically necessary services.

  • Shots

  • Screenings. If you go to a doctor or other health care provider that accepts the Medicare-approved amount, your share of costs may be less. If you get a service that Medicare doesn’t cover, you pay the full cost.

  • Click here for more information

Options with Medicare

  • You can go to any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare, anywhere in the U.S. Find providers that work with Medicare.

  • Join a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D) to get drug coverage.

  • Buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy to help lower your share of costs for services you get.

  • If you have other insurance, learn how Original Medicare works with your other coverage.

If you're not lawfully present in the U.S., Medicare won't pay for your Part A and Part B claims, and you can't enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare drug plan.

Do you qualify?

Medicaid eligibility may vary from state to state, as Medicaid as a program is primarily run through the states. However, many states have expanded their Medicaid programs to cover more low-income adults. You might be eligible depending on your household income, family size, age, disability, and other factors. You must be a United States (U.S.) citizen, a U.S. national, or have a satisfactory immigration status to be eligible for full benefits.

In order to be eligible for CHIP, a child must be:

States have the option to provide coverage, such as prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care, to targeted low-income uninsured pregnant women under the CHIP state plan. States must adhere to several types of conditions in order to cover pregnant women, such as:

  • Cover children under 19 years of age under Medicaid or CHIP, up to at least 200 percent of the FPL, and
